![]() When Tony found out that someone he really admires was writing a book and was looking for some input, he jumped right on the confuser and submitted a few tips about how a staycation can save a bunch of money for the traveler. He had no idea that someone he really looks up to, Clark Howard, would turn that input into five pages in his new book Living Large for the Long Haul. But even more, it turns out that Clark Howard was really interested in what Tony had to say about staycations and how they can be a real savings so he arranged for an interview with Tony that lasted some 10 minutes. Now the value of 10 minutes of air time on a nationally-syndicated radio program is probably equivalent to the combined value of all the vintage and modern cars on the Featherbed Railroad property, so we're really grateful for this opportunity. Who is Clark Howard? Clark Howard is a nationally syndicated consumer expert who advises consumers how to save more, spend less and avoid getting ripped off. His radio show is heard every day on more than 200 radio stations throughout North America. He is also co-host of HLN's nightly news program Evening Express with CNN's Ryan Smith. "Save more and spend less" is more than just a motto for Clark; it's a way of life. As a successful lifelong entrepreneur, media star and best-selling author, the Atlanta-based "consumer champion" is dedicated to helping Americans of all means get ahead in life. As a big fan of talk radio, Tony likes to point out what an incredibly gracious host Clark Howard is and how he treats each caller with respect, a real rarity in such a widely-syndicated show. Clark's career included stints in both government and private sectors. He was a civilian employee working for the U.S. Air Force at the end of the Vietnam War. He launched a travel agency in 1981 that grew into a chain with locations across metro Atlanta. In 1987, he sold the company at 31 and retired. Clark found his way into the public eye almost by accident. While enjoying retirement on the pristine beaches of Florida, he was asked to be a guest on a radio show about travel. The response was so positive that he was given his own program, The Clark Howard Show. The show originates from Atlanta's AM 750 and NOW 95.5 FM News/Talk WSB and is syndicated by Dial Global. As mentioned, Clark Howard is a very gracious gentleman and he gave us permission to post the interview right here on the Featherbed Railroad's blog.
