While most people think of Clear Lake as being the major lake in Lake County, there are many others as well including Blue Lakes. While Clear Lake is large and shallow, Blue Lakes is very deep and remains refreshingly cool throughout the summer. In addition, there is a large fleet of electric boats for rent on Blue Lakes and this adventure starts there.
Blue Lakes is spring-fed, leaving it unaffected by larger climatological factors that many are experiencing across western North America. That means the waters are clean, ideal for swimming and fishing year-round. Although Blue Lakes is comprised of two separate lakes (Upper and Lower), locals refer to both lakes as simply “Blue Lakes”—perhaps to honor its one-of-a-kind, limnological nature.
Sitting at the base of the scenic and pine-tree-covered Cold Creek Canyon, these lakes form their own little ecosystem with clean groundwater keeping them free from the spread of algae and other various aquatic weeds.
Electric boats make a lot of sense on Blue Lakes where the speed limit is 5mph, the same as the top speed of an electric boat. Unlike gasoline-powered boats, electric boats ease along the water almost completely silently allowing you to enjoy conversation and marvel at the alpine feel of Blue Lakes.
Our journey was aboard an electric patio-style boat where we left our dock and headed out for adventure with a picnic in hand. As the boat glided along the water it was amazing how the hills along the lake rise so steeply and the evergreen forest that calls these hills home remains beautifully green even in late summer.
For those who like to fish Blue Lakes is home to trout as it’s deep, cool waters are the perfect place to find these.
