The 2016 Lake County Wine Awards Competition hosted by the Lake County Winery Association (LCWA) at Langtry Estate wrapped up yesterday. Ten professional wine judges tasted 129 wines during the two day competition. At the end of the judging, six wines were awarded the coveted Sweepstakes awards, the “best of the best” red, white, pink, and dessert wines.
Every tourism destination craves attention in a crowded field, especially today with so many messages coming at us from all over. But the three devastating fires that we had in September weren’t exactly the national media exposure we wanted only because there are over 1300 people who would probably prefer that their homes are still intact. But a question that we get is very simple: why should I come to Lake County and spend my valuable vacation time? Isn’t most of everything burned down?
The simple answer is: no. The fact is all of the businesses and services a visitor to Lake County could be interested in are still standing. None of our wineries burned down, only a very few restaurants at the south end of the County were damaged and there are still many thousands of acres of beautiful wild lands for those seeking an incredible outdoor adventure.
Recently the County challenged a number of Lake County wedding professionals to come up with a unique vision for a wedding. Our challenge was to come up with some ideas for a vintage wedding - and boy did we do so. So, if you would follow us back in time, we'd love to take you on a journey through a very special wedding day that will happen in the past - during the time of Prohibition...
So, it’s the celebration of the new year and you wanna go out and do something fun here in Lake County? Fortunately there are a lot of different choices of activities available and even different times that you can celebrate the coming of the new year. Whether you’re looking for a nice lavish dinner, a blow-out party, help solve a murder, or just something for the kids to enjoy the venues in Lake County have you covered.
This blog post is current as of its initial posting but I will update it should I get more information. In the DJ business we referred to new year’s eve as the amateur drinker’s night so please be careful out there. We have several taxi services including Riley Cab and Maria’s Midnight Rides. Make sure to keep those numbers handy! As usual I've linked the businesses to their Yelp pages where possible.
Wherever there's a problem, there's also a solution. For example, imagine wanting to drink Gregory Graham's award-winning wines by the pool. But not being able to have glassware presents a problem.
Gregory not only makes outstanding wines but has a solution for the poolside wine enjoyment - new wine pouches. These magnum-sized pouches keep wine outstanding for up to six weeks after they're initially opened and what a great wine Gregory's chosen for these pouches.
One of the things people have asked us over the years is to place a bottle of wine or sparkling wine in their rooms as a surprise to their traveling partner for a special occasion, like an anniversary, birthday or even just because that new haircut looks so great. Up to now we haven't been able to provide alcohol of any kind, even though we're right in the heart of wine country.
Well, like Pa Kettle, Tony finally got around to getting everything in order for the permit and we got it!
As of February 2, we are able to provide things like sparkling wines or other local wines for you upon arrival. We are currently working on building up our wine cellar and there is certainly a lot of extensive research (hic!) required to do an effective job in this department.
As some may know, we moved to Lake County from the South Bay region of Southern California (specifically El Segundo!) and one of our neighbors, Jeff, from Uncorked, featured a Lake County wine this week on his video series. That's our old neighborhood taking note of something from our new neighborhood!
Chacewater is one of many wineries here in Lake County and, in 2012, won Golden State Winery. They also produce some terrific olive oil and we've particularly had fun with their blood orange olive oil and some local squash. Yum.
